A few months before the official presentation, Mini has just revealed new information about its next generation of electric city car.

Like the current model, the next generation of Mini will be available in a fully electric version. The offer will even double, with not just one but two “zero emissions at the tailpipe” versions of the car. The first will be called Cooper E, the second Cooper SE. The very name Cooper will now refer to the model and no longer a specific sportier version. It will thus be used across the entire range.

Both electric versions of what should be called simply “Cooper” will showcase progress in terms of range, one of the main weaknesses of the current model. With its 54 kWh battery, the Cooper SE could potentially travel nearly 400 km on a single charge. The Cooper E, on the other hand, will have to settle for a 40 kWh battery. These few fewer kWh will inevitably impact the autonomy, but it will still remain well above the 234 km of the current Mini electric.

More than 200 hp for the Mini Cooper SE

The power of the electric motor will vary between versions. About 180 hp on the Cooper E (identical to the current model), increasing to around 215 hp on the Cooper SE. In both cases, only the front wheels will be driven. A JCW version with a few more horses could appear a bit later. It would retain the 54 kWh battery.

As for styling, no major overhaul is expected. The new Cooper will not be identical to its predecessor but won’t diverge too much either. It will still measure about 3.8 meters in length, despite the increased wheelbase.

The new Mini Electric Cooper will be produced in China. It will hit the market in May 2024, two months ahead of the internal combustion versions of the model. Overall, prices are expected to rise compared to the current model, which starts at around €37,000.

As a reminder, Mini plans to offer an electric version of the next Countryman. A new electric Aceman is also expected to debut in 2025. With its size comparable to the Jeep Avenger, this vehicle will sit between the Cooper and the Countryman. It will be the first model from the brand offered exclusively in electric form.
